Internet fads are such a weird phenomena. No, not the fads themselves but the fact that once every couple years or so, a new set of images based on an entirely different idiotic concept starts swarming the net for no particular reason. Other then "general silliness", these memes have no connection between them whatsoever. The first one I recall is the eternal lasting All Your Base. Video games, bad Japanese translation - what's not to like? But then it span out of control and suddenly , instead of funny mistranslated gibberish, the new context was "All Your Base - everywhere". With music. Oh, internet, why must you wreck everything good?

Some fads I don't get at all. LOLCats, for instance: pictures of cats, accompanied by random text with bad grammar. Who are we laughing at the expense of here? Cats? NEWSFLASH - THEY CAN'T READ IT. Illiterate people? NEWSFLASH AGAIN - THEY CAN'T READ IT EITHER. If you go through all this length to make fun of someone, make sure that someone knows you're laughing about him! LOLSpiders... now that is something I can relate to.

I've also identified a growing new fad these days. A deformed mutation of Despair Inc's demotivational posters. They look about the same, but instead of providing slightly amusing catch phrases, they provide... well, nothing. Look, I'm all about nonsense humour, but even nonsense has to say... err... something! You can't just stick a "weird" picture in there and expect funniness to tag along.

And of course, then we have our obligatory "THIS IS SPARTA". Never before did a catchphrase spawn so many spoofs and parodies as Gerard Butler's overbearing outcry. His convulsed face appearing on cartoons, signs, inanimate objects, dancers, transformers, soccer players and game show participants throughout the net, all proclaiming their location with utter and absolute zeal. Seriously though, can you be more assertive?
